Green Split Peas (ACO) 500g

Organic Green Split Peas are green peas that have the husk removed and split in half. They have a mild flavour and soft texture once cooked. Green split peas have more of an earthy flavour than whole dried peas, and are similar to the lentil in versatility and nourishment. Often used in thick soups and stews but also can be used to make dips or spreads.

Green split peas provide a good source of protein and fibre in your diet.

No GMO. Preservative free.

How to Use

Split peas are most commonly used in thick soups and stews. The peas break apart when cooking, adding to the texture of the soup. Split peas can also be used to make dips and spreads or they can be included with ingredients in baked casseroles or stuffings.

Green split peas do not need to be soaked before cooking; however, it will shorten cooking time. Before cooking rinse in a bowl of water and repeat several times. Cover peas with at least double the amount of water or stock. Bring to the boil, reduce heat to medium and cook for about 45 min. or until tender. Drain and use as needed. For soups, broth and slow cooked hot pots sauté onions and aromatics in a little oil before adding dried peas. Add broth or other liquid and cook as above, timing the addition of vegetables, meat or chicken with fresh herbs to be cooked when split peas are done. For creamier, soft peas continue cooking until desired consistency is achieved. Serve as a puree with herbs and garlic next to grilled fish or vegetables. Yummy smashed with sumac or Dukkah as a dip or spread. Green split peas are great in minestrone or with lamb shanks. Or add to veggie burger mix.
