Hundreds of millions of people around the world drink coffee on a daily basis.  It’s the second most consumed beverage to water in most nations and is also the second most sought-after commodity in the world (behind crude oil) and worth over $100 billion worldwide.

Despite its immense popularity, you will often see articles and news stories on “is coffee (more specifically “caffeine”) good or bad for you?” This question has been thrown around for centuries and the answer, based on functional medicine research, is yes and no.

If you don’t have any existing auto-immune disease, hypertension, digestive issues or an intolerance to coffee - it can have many health benefits.

Given coffee's popular daily ritual in all our lives, we set out to specifically source and test Numero Uno Coffee, who have been dubbed as serious "game-changers" in the Australian coffee industry for over eighteen years. Their selection process includes sourcing coffee that has been grown, washed and dried under the strictest of conditions in order to achieve the best possible product for optimal health benefits.

Next to tobacco, coffee is sprayed with more chemicals than any other product consumed by humans. The Process

Their coffee plantations are grown under rainforest canopies and in high altitudes from around 1800 to 4000 asl. It is within these ideal growing conditions that the beans mature more slowly and produce more natural sugars which translates to a rich and mellow flavour in the cup with delicate notes of caramel, panela, raisins.  

Shade grown coffee accounts for less than 2 percent of the global coffee market.  It takes longer to grow, but when you consider how this is also more beneficial for the environment as opposed to commercially produced, full sun coffee production – the result is also a taste which is far more superior.  

The coffee beans are hand-picked at their ripest, taking on a deep red colour, and then fermented for up to 26 hours.  From there they are hand rinsed with fresh, pure water and sun-dried until they’ve achieved a moisture content of 11.5%.  A precise balance must be maintained as too much moisture and the beans risk attracting mould, and too dry will ruin the flavour of the beans.

Mass produced coffees are typically the most heavily chemically sprayed crops as this delicate process is no longer feasible in the quantities required to produce name brand coffees.

Coffee Nutrition Facts

Dr Josh Axe, Functional Medicine Practitioner explains the nutritional content in coffee:

“The two most commonly grown types of coffee are arabica and robusta. While not a big contributor of vitamins and minerals to your diet, coffee is a much better choice than energy drinks, soda, and sweetened teas or juices. It contains no sugar or carbs and virtually no calories, so it fits into nearly all diets, including the vegan, Paleo and ketogenic diet.

One 250ml cup of regular coffee nutrition contains about:

  • 2.4 calories
  • 0.3 gram protein
  • 0.2 milligrams riboflavin (11 percent DV)
  • 0.6 milligram pantothenic acid (6 percent DV)
  • 116 milligrams potassium (3 percent DV)
  • 0.1 milligram manganese (3 percent DV)
  • 7.1 milligrams magnesium (2 percent DV)
  • 0.5 milligram niacin (2 percent DV)

How much caffeine in coffee is there? The level can vary quite a bit depending on factors like the type of bean, manufacturer and method used for making the coffee. For example, a standard cup from Starbucks is known to contain a much higher coffee caffeine amount than the average medium-roast coffee you’d make at home.

According to the USDA, an average eight-ounce cup of brewed coffee from ground beans contains about 95 milligrams of caffeine. Meanwhile, the same size cup from Starbucks (which would be a “short”) contains a whopping 155 milligrams. In contrast, an average espresso contains about 64 milligrams, and a cup of green tea has about 44 milligrams. That means drinking a cup of coffee from Starbucks provides more than three times the amount of caffeine as a green tea made using one tea bag.”

 

Side Effects

WebMD explains the possible side-effects of coffee and in particular, excess use of coffee:

“Coffee is safe for most adults. Drinking more than 6 cups/day might cause “caffeinism” with symptoms such as anxiety or agitation. People who drink a lot of coffee every day may need to drink more coffee to get the same effects. They may also become “dependent” on coffee to the point that they develop withdrawal symptoms if they suddenly stop drinking it.

Coffee containing caffeine can cause insomnia, nervousness and restlessness, stomach upset, nausea and vomiting, increased heart and breathing rate, and other side effects. Consuming large amounts of coffee might also cause headache, anxiety, agitation, ringing in the ears, and irregular heartbeats.

Drinking unfiltered coffee can increase total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and levels of another type of blood fat called triglycerides. This might increase the risk of developing heart disease. Using coffee filters helps to reduce these effects on cholesterol.

There is some concern that drinking more than 5 cups of coffee per day might not be safe for people with heart disease. But for people who don't have heart disease, drinking several cups daily does not seem to increase the chance of developing a heart problem.

There is also concern that occasional coffee drinking might trigger a heart attack in some people. People who usually don't drink more than one cup of coffee daily and also have multiple risk factors for heart disease seem to have an increased risk for heart attack within an hour after drinking coffee. But people who regularly drink greater amounts do not seem to have this risk.

Coffee might be unsafe when given rectally as an enema. Coffee enemas have been linked to cases of severe side effects including death.

Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding

Caffeinated coffee is probably safe for pregnant women in amounts of 2 cups per day or less. This amount of coffee provides about 200 mg of caffeine. However, drinking more than this amount has been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and low birth weight. These risks increase as the amount of coffee the mother drinks during pregnancy increases.

Drinking 1 or 2 of cups of coffee per day seems to be safe for breast-feeding mothers and their infants. But the caffeine in larger amounts can irritate a nursing infant’s digestive tract and also cause sleep problems and irritability.

Children

It may be unsafe for children to drink caffeinated coffee. The side effects associated with caffeine are usually more severe in children than adults.

Anxiety disorders: The caffeine in coffee might make anxiety worse.

Bleeding disorders: There is some concern that coffee might make bleeding disorders worse.

Heart disease: Drinking unfiltered (boiled) coffee increases the amount of cholesterol and other fats in the blood, and also raises the level of homocysteine, all of which are associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. Some research suggests an association between heart attacks and drinking coffee.

Diabetes: Use caffeine with caution if you have diabetes and monitor your blood sugar carefully.

Diarrhea: Coffee contains caffeine. The caffeine in coffee, especially when taken in large amounts, can worsen diarrhea.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Coffee contains caffeine. The caffeine in coffee, especially when taken in large amounts, can worsen diarrhea and might worsen symptoms of IBS.

Glaucoma: Drinking caffeinated coffee increases pressure inside the eye. The increase starts within 30 minutes and lasts for at least 90 minutes.

High blood pressure: Drinking caffeinated coffee might increase blood pressure in people with high blood pressure. However, this effect might be less in people who drink coffee regularly.

Thinning bones (osteoporosis): Drinking caffeinated coffee can increase the amount of calcium that is flushed out in the urine. This might weaken bones. If you have osteoporosis, limit caffeine consumption to less than 300 mg per day (approximately 2-3 cups of coffee). Taking calcium supplements may help to make up for calcium that is lost. Postmenopausal women who have an inherited condition that keeps them from processing vitamin D normally, should be especially cautious when using caffeine.”

How to Maximise Storage for Coffee

1) Small Amounts/Daily storage of Coffee – keep in an airscape canister.

2) Large Amounts/Long-term storage of Coffee – keep frozen BPA free sealable bags in the freezer.

Keep 500mls in an air-tight container for daily use.  Vacu-Seal and freeze the rest in the BPA-free bags around 500mls at a time.  1 day before running out of the beans in the canister, let one of your frozen bags thaw in a dark cabinet for a day (you don’t want to open the bag if the beans are still frozen) – then throw those beans in your canister and enjoy.

Please advise if you would like to physically sign for your package and we will ensure the driver does not leave your order until it has been signed. This information is acquired during the checkout process, before payment, under “delivery instructions”.  We also ship to PO boxes by only if shipping is via Australia Post. If you would like to sign for your order and it’s being shipped via Australia Post, there is an additional $2 service fee.

Note: if you request for your order to be signed on delivery and no one is home to sign when the courier arrives, we are unable to take responsibility for any items that have spoiled as a result of being returned to our third-party transport company.

If it is perishable items (fresh produce & broth), we prefer not to leave it outside for more than an hour and recommend having someone home; friend, neighbour or family member to sign for it.
